Clays as mineral formations widespread in the upper part of the Earth’s crust and used in various fields of human activity are described. Crystallochemical peculiarities of clay minerals, physico-chemical processes on the mineral-water boundary surface, structures and contact interactions in clay systems are considered from the viewpoint of modem structural mineralogy, physics of surface phenomena and physico-chemical mechanics of fine systems. Theoretical fundamentals of clay properties formation are discussed proceeding from clay genesis and all processes operating in clays in the course of geological history. A significant attention is paid to lithogenesis processes transforming clay sediments in the following succession: silt, plastic clay, compacted clay, cemented clay, argillite, and clay shale.
The book is intended for a wide range of readers, including experts in geology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, geomechanics, and others.
