This publication covers the articles submitted to the conference “Engineering geology and geoenvironment protection. State-of-the-art and development prospects" devoted to the 90th anniversary of academician E.M. Sergeev ( Moscow , March 23-24, 2004 ). The conference was held in the framework of annual session of the Scientific Council RAS on the environmental geoscience, engineering geology and hydrogeology "Sergeevskie chteniya”. The discussion dealt with the following topics: general theoretical problems in engineering geology and environmental geoscience; soil and rock engineering, mechanics, and improvement methods; natural and human-induced geological processes, and risk assessment; contamination and protection of geoenvironment; functioning of natural and technonatural systems, and the development of research methods and techniques.
