The Congress has been designed to set up a forum for a broad debate of the most significant advances in the geological sciences, as well as to promote discussion of the Congress theme: "From the Mediterranean area toward a global geological renaissance – geology, natural hazards, and cultural heritage."
Among the subjects covered were geological hazards, geo-resources and cultural heritage, the relationship between fundamental and applied geosciences, understanding the earth, promoting international scientific co-operation and the role of geology in solving environmental problems.
